Parking is really expensive these days, but there’s nothing worse than having to pay £30 or more for an extra five minutes on your stay at the meter. The iPhone’s native clock application can come in quite handy for a countdown timer, so long as you remember to factor in enough time to sprint through town and unlock the car door before Satan’s minions slap the ticket on your windscreen.

This is essentially what the Parking Mate app offers, only a lot more. It’s about as close as you can get to certainty that a parking ticket won’t go forgotten, assuming you don’t lose your iPhone in the meantime.

The time is set quickly and easily with a simple slider that moves in five minute increments, and sounds an alarm when it runs down. Alongside the nice parking meter graphic is a secondary setting for how much of a buffer the alarm leaves you, triggering the alarm five, ten or however many minutes you feel will be required to get back to the car before time runs out and the money runs up..
